FAQs

Skin Micropigmenation is a semi-permanent treatment that will last many years to come if cared for correctly. Like anything, nothing lasts forever, there are many environmental and nutritional factors that come into play such as diet and sun care for an example. On average our skin naturally sheds and regenerates every 28 days, due to this process it’s only natural your treatment will slightly fade and require touch ups in order to keep your treatment looking as fresh as when you first had it done. SMP will last anywhere between 5-7 years however clients tend to come back between the years of 2-4 for a freshen up.

Each and every client is unique therefore requiring a tailored plan to ensure natural results. Natural hair follicle sizes and colour at the root are matched during your SMP treatment. We have a specialised colour chart to determine your color based off your Skin colour, age, ethnicity and hair colour (from tip of hair not root of hair).

We also use a variety of needle sizes to best suit your hair follicle shaft size and take into consideration how far you have progressed in losing your hair in order to determine how far we should blend down to create flawless results. On average we fade all treatments about 2.5 cms into the existing hairline.

If any of our clients experience further hair loss the solution to the problem is very simple. We touch up the area and blend back into the existing SMP to create a seamless blend.

Yes, SMP is quite different to regular tattooing. While they share many similarities such as using a gun and a needle to deposit ink in to the skin, however SMP and conventional tattoo methods are different for the reasons listed below:

Skin micro-pigmenation

Ink: We use vegan friendly, organic carbon based inks.

Needles: Specialized micro needles developed for SMP only.

Method: Ink is deposited into the first layer of skin called the epidermis which is approximately 1mm in thickness.

Technique: repetitive specialized dotting technique to replicate hair follicle shafts. Not over the same surface area of skin

Pain: as per client feedback 2-4/10

Permanence: SMP is a semi permanent (5-7 years) and therefore not life lasting due to the lack of depth the ink is deposited into, however factors such as skin type + nutrition and lifestyle will determine how long it lasts.

Conventional tattoo

Ink: non vegan friendly and inorganic based inks

Needles: much larger in diameter, length and sizing to accommodate for artists wants and needs.

Method: ink is deposited into the third layer of skin called the hypodermis which is approximately 2-5mm deep. This method is far more invasive than SMP.

Technique: repetitive deep lines and shading over same surface area of skin Pain: 6-9/10 depending on location of tattoo

Permanence: life long, however will blur over time.

At Cosmetic Hair Ink we only use carbon based, vegan friendly organic pigments which have been specially developed for Skin micropigmentation only. These pigments will not change in colour like conventional tattoo inks (may become green or brown over time) and will only soften and lighten as time goes on.

We only use medical grade micro needles specifically designed and developed for smp. Each needle is single use, individually packaged and selected for each client.

To achieve optimal results with your SMP and desired look, 2-4 sessions are usually required. To ensure your scalp has enough time to heal between sessions, we recommend waiting 7-14 days before your next session.

We build density of your hair tattoo in the first two sessions, while feathering and definition are completed in the third session. In the event that a fourth session is necessary, your artist will inform you during your free consultation so that there are no surprises at the end!

Since your skin regenerates once every 28 days, we leave more time before your final session, and we always adjust your tattoo based on how it heals. Our technician will advise you otherwise based on your skin type.

Hair loss pattern, area of the scalp to be covered, and scars on the scalp will all determine the cost of Scalp Micropigmentation with Cosmetic Hair Ink.

Your SMP technician will assess these elements during your free consultation and tailor a treatment plan with a total price, before beginning any treatments.

You can expect to pay the following:

SMP for men: starting from $1500

SMP for Women: Starting from $1000

Density treatments: Starting from $1000

Beard density treatments: Starting from $750

Scar Concealment treatments: Starting from $300.00

The pigment may lighten slightly with time and exposure to the sun. If the appearance needs to be brought back to its original high standard in the future, it may be necessary to return for a touch-up. The amount of sun exposure and skin type can affect how often touch-ups are needed, but this can take years. Additionally, if you experience further hair loss, we can touch up or add more density.

In most cases, clients describe the pain as an annoying itching sensation rather than a painful sensation. Nerve endings in the front temples, hairline, and sides of the head cause the most pain according to our feedback. In general, our clients note that getting a SMP tattoo isn’t nearly as painful as getting a traditional tattoo, although there is some discomfort during the procedure.

SMP, or hair tattooing, has the advantage that you can increase your coverage in the future if you experience further hair loss. In the same way, if you wish to add further density or thickness in certain areas, you can do so. The option of covering one’s entire scalp is also available, and it is also achievable!

In addition to its immediate impact on your confidence and appearance, SMP also offers long-term flexibility, with options based on the amount of hair loss you may experience in the future.

After your SMP treatments, it is very important to maintain the treated area to ensure a successful long-term outcome. When exposed to the sun, we recommend using a good quality sunscreen and wearing a hat. Protecting your hair tattoo from damaging UV rays will help ensure its appearance and ensure the procedure will remain as it was originally intended by your technician.

Needling during micropigmentation stimulates the scalp and increases blood flow to the area, so NO, it does not damage existing hair follicles or prevent future hair growth.

Generally, YES if any parts of your hair are completely bald. It is most convenient for our technicians to work with it when it is 0.5-1mm long. To ensure a seamless transition between long hairs and the flat tattoo, clients must shave their hair every 2-4 days. In order to make your treatment experience more convenient, we offer in-house shaving services.

Shaving is not necessary if the client just wants some density added to thinning hair. Women do not have to shave their heads since we work in between the hair strands.

We offer a free 12 month treatment guarantee to cover any fading and changes to hairline within the first year of your first treatment. Touch ups are one session only and will cover all necessary steps such as blending, hairline rejuvenation and density for any pigmentation that has naturally shed away.
